Sarajevo and Albania Explore Direct Flight Links to Boost Regional Integration
New aviation routes between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania discussed as a strategic step for tourism, business, and mobility

Discussions on expanding air connectivity in the Western Balkans gained momentum during a meeting between the Acting Director of Sarajevo International Airport Public Company, Dino Selimović, and the Ambassador of the Republic of Albania to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Anita Shaqiri. The central focus was the possible introduction of direct flights (fluturime direkte) between Sarajevo and major Albanian destinations, reflecting a concrete effort to improve regional connectivity (lidhje rajonale) and transport efficiency.
The proposal specifically includes routes linking Sarajevo with Tirana and Vlore, two important urban and coastal centers in Albania. Establishing these air routes (linja ajrore) is considered a strategic move to strengthen tourism flows (rrjedha turistike) and facilitate easier movement between the two countries. Tirana, as Albania’s capital, represents a political and economic hub, while Vlore plays a key role in coastal tourism, making both destinations highly relevant for increased passenger traffic.
Both parties underlined the significance of strengthening cooperation across the Western Balkans, particularly in the context of a shared European future. Emphasis was placed on regional cooperation (bashkëpunim rajonal) and the alignment of both countries with broader European integration (integrim evropian) objectives. Improved transport infrastructure is viewed as a necessary condition for economic alignment and cross-border collaboration.
The introduction of direct flights is expected to increase mobility (lëvizshmëri) and create new market opportunities (mundësi tregu) for businesses operating in sectors such as tourism, trade, and services. Enhanced accessibility between Sarajevo and Albanian cities could lead to increased business exchanges and institutional cooperation, strengthening economic ties through more efficient travel options.
Beyond economic implications, the initiative is also framed as a contribution to broader regional goals. Improved air links are associated with regional stability (stabilitet rajonal) and the promotion of shared strategic goals (qëllime strategjike të përbashkëta) among Western Balkan countries. Strengthening transportation networks is seen as a practical mechanism for fostering long-term cooperation and integration.
In practical terms, new direct routes could reduce travel time significantly compared to current itineraries that often require connecting flights through other European hubs. This improvement in efficiency is likely to enhance passenger demand and support the development of new travel patterns within the region, particularly for short-haul routes between neighboring countries.
From an aviation perspective, regional airports such as Sarajevo International Airport are increasingly seeking to expand their route networks to remain competitive. According to industry data from organizations such as International Air Transport Association, regional connectivity plays a critical role in economic development by enabling faster movement of people and goods. Similarly, the Airports Council International has emphasized that smaller and mid-sized airports benefit significantly from direct international connections, particularly in emerging markets like the Western Balkans.
The potential Sarajevo–Albania routes align with broader trends in European aviation, where demand for regional and point-to-point travel has grown steadily in recent years. Increased connectivity between secondary cities is often linked to higher tourism revenues and stronger business ecosystems, especially in regions undergoing economic transition.
If implemented, the proposed flights between Sarajevo, Tirana, and Vlore would represent a tangible step toward improving infrastructure links in Southeast Europe. By facilitating easier access and reducing logistical barriers, these routes could support sustained economic cooperation and reinforce the shared European trajectory of both Bosnia and Herzegovina and Albania.
