A working dinner held in Pristina on April 15 brought together Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti and the European Union’s Special Representative for the Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue, Peter Sørensen. The meeting focused on Kosovo’s path toward the European Union, with discussions centered on EU integration process (proces integrimi në BE) and the alignment of policies with European standards.

According to a statement issued by the Government of Kosovo, the two officials addressed the country’s commitment to reforms and its strategic objective of aligning foreign policy with the European Union. The discussions included foreign policy alignment (përputhje e politikës së jashtme) with the 27-member bloc, emphasizing the importance of consistent positioning in international affairs as part of Kosovo’s long-term European trajectory.

“In the context of European integration, the process of membership in the Council of Europe was also discussed. Prime Minister Kurti and Special Representative Sørensen also discussed political developments and domestic developments”, the press release reads. These topics highlight the broader institutional framework within which Kosovo is pursuing integration, including engagement with international organizations and internal political dynamics.

The meeting in Pristina followed earlier diplomatic contacts in Belgrade, where Sørensen met with Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić and Petar Petković, Director of the Office for Kosovo and Metohija. These discussions are part of the ongoing Belgrade-Pristina Dialogue (dialogu Beograd-Prishtinë), a process facilitated by the European Union aimed at normalizing relations between the two sides.

Sørensen described his meetings in Serbia positively, stating that he had “good meetings” with Vučić and Petković. He added that the discussions were focused on advancing key issues and reviewing the implementation of legal frameworks, including the Law on Foreigners. “Agreed on the need to stay engaged and work together for concrete benefits for all”, he stated, underlining the practical objectives of the dialogue process.

At the same time, the Serbian President conveyed concerns regarding developments in Kosovo. He stated that measures taken by authorities in Pristina, particularly those implemented without coordination, “create serious pressure on the Serbian people and Serbian institutions in Kosovo”. These remarks reflect ongoing disagreements over governance and policy implementation on the ground, highlighting the complexity of regional tensions (tensione rajonale).

The dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina remains a central element of the European Union’s policy in the Western Balkans. Progress in this process is closely linked to both parties’ prospects for EU membership, making normalization of relations (normalizim i marrëdhënieve) a key priority for regional stability and integration.

The discussions in Pristina also addressed internal political developments, indicating that domestic governance remains closely connected to international engagement. Issues such as institutional reforms and political coordination are essential components of Kosovo’s broader strategy for integration into European structures.

The meeting between Kurti and Sørensen illustrates the continued diplomatic efforts to maintain dialogue and advance reforms. By focusing on both internal and external dimensions, the talks reflect the interconnected nature of political processes in the Western Balkans, where progress in one area often depends on developments in another.

As negotiations and discussions continue, the emphasis remains on achieving tangible outcomes that can support stability and cooperation in the region. The commitment to sustained engagement, as expressed during recent meetings, underscores the importance of dialogue as a mechanism for addressing complex political challenges.
